Proper Storage Of A Forklift
There are many reasons why a warehouse or distribution center would not use all of its fleet of forklifts at any one time. The warehouse in question handles seasonal goods, so that there are heavy and slow periods of business. There’s a downturn in the market and a few lifts in the fleet need to be retired until things pick up.
Whatever the reason, forklifts need to be properly stored during these situations. In addition, if you are not a 24/7 business, then there are times when there is a need to store your machines.
Proper storage of a forklift will ensure that they are ready when they’re needed. Proper storage will also ensure that the lifts will survive as long as they are supposed to or even increase their longevity.

Proper storage of a forklift also will reduce overall maintenance costs and reduce potential downtime due to excessive wear and tear. Proper storage can even protect lifts from bad weather.
If you use your fleet of forklifts daily, then consider these tips for proper storage of a forklift during down time like overnight or over a series of shifts.
• Select a dry and level area for storage.
• Make certain that the parking brake is properly engaged.
• Always tilt the mast to the vertical position and the tines lowered to the ground.
• Turn the ignition switch to the “off” position and remove the key.
• Move the lift and tilt levers back and fourth a couple of times to release remaining pressure in the piping to the cylinder.
• When storing natural gas or propane-powered forklifts, close the fuel outlet valve on the LPG container and turn the key switch to “off” after the engine has stopped.
Consider these tips when storing forklifts for the long term.
• If the lifts are battery-powered, disconnect the battery plug to prevent electrical discharge and store the lifts in a dark place.
• Apply anti-rust grease to the shaft, rod and other exposed parts.
• Cover the breather and other places where moisture may enter.
• Lubricate all lubrication points.
• Maintain the tire air pressure to standard on pneumatic tire trucks.
• Run the forklift once a week.
• When natural gas or propane-powered forklifts are involved, close the fuel outlet valve on the LPG container and turn the key switch to the “off” position after the engine has stopped naturally.
These storage tips will help to ensure that your fleet of forklifts function for its full life.
