Bent or Broken Forks Should Be Replaced, Not Repaired

There’s an argument to be made that the forks on your lift truck do the most work and have the hardest job. After all, they are where the payload weight is supported and they literally do all the heavy lifting.

So it’s not unheard of for forklift forks to eventually weaken, wear out, or even break. This is especially truck if the driver tried to lift a load that was above the vehicle’s payload capacity. Forklifts are rated to lift a maximum specific weight, which is posted on the vehicle on a metal plate that usually can be found on the mast or within line of sight of the driver’s cabin.

Try and lift a load heavier than this maximum and it’s possible that your forks will bend, crack, or snap off altogether.

When this happens, it’s a good idea to simply replace the damaged fork altogether rather than try to repair it.

Forklift Replacement Forks

The reason you should replace broken forklift forks rather than try to repair them is that once their structural integrity is compromised, it’s practically impossible to know with any type of accuracy what their maximum weight load is.

For example, let’s say your forklift is rated to lift a maximum of 6,000 pounds. Your operator accidentally tries to lift a pallet carrying iron bars that weigh a total of 8,000 pounds. The daily post-shift inspection determines that the forks have formed a crack where they attach to the mast.

For a while, your forklift may seem fine. You may even be able to lift pallets weight up to 6,000 pounds for days or even weeks after the incident. But in reality, the fork’s ability to properly carry weights has been compromised. And it’s only a matter of time before they fail.

When they do, it can result in damaged products and property and even injuries to the operator or nearby pedestrians. It’s not worth the risk.

Replacing Your Forks

Trying to repair forks by welding them or bending them back into shape isn’t the right solution. It could even void your warranty.
