Renting Forklifts Could Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
According to a study by the European Rental Association (ERA), efficient use of equipment including forklifts can result in carbon footprint reduction of between 30 percent and 50 percent.
ERA commissioned three independent research companies including Climate Neutral Group, CE Delfi, and SGS Search to measure CO2 emissions over the full life-cycle of ten pieces of commonly used equipment –- earth-moving, access, power, and material handling.
The study found that depending on specific user practice, efficient use of the equipment, with rental being one model of efficient use, could reduce lifetime carbon footprint significantly.
The companies involved in the study produced a carbon footprint calculator based on multiple parameters. The greatest influence on carbon footprint is intensity of use, using the appropriate equipment, and transport and maintenance.
The calculator permits a company that rents its forklifts as well as contractors to input data to determine whether they are being carbon efficient or inefficient. When combined with the ERA’s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculator, the carbon calculator will assist companies in choosing the most efficient and most environmentally friendly model for equipment use.
